The search process in Site Explorer consists of three main parts:

1. Protocol

Note: Only use single-protocol search when you need to search for specific content at an exact URL, or when looking for pages that have not been properly converted from HTTP to HTTPS.

2. URLs

• Subdomain
• Subfolders
• Exact URL

3. Search Mode

Specify the search scope based on the entered URL. There are four options:

Subdomains

Search the entire domain along with all subdomains.

For example, when searching for ahrefs.com, the range will include data from the root domain and all subdomains like “www.ahrefs.com“, “help.ahrefs.com”, “docs.ahrefs.com”, etc.

Domain Name (Domain)

Search for a single domain or subdomain.

For example, you can search for “ahrefs.com” and exclude data from subdomains (like “help.ahrefs.com”) or analyze only the part of the site on the subdomain.

Path

Search the site’s subfolders.

For example, a search for “ahrefs.com/blog/” will only show data for pages located in the /blog/ subfolder.

Exact URL (Exact URL)

Get data for a specific URL.

For example: When you want to search for a website’s homepage URL, or a specific blog post or landing page.

Important note: Pay attention to whether your target website uses “www” in the URL. For example, when searching for hubspot.com in exact URL mode, without adding “www”, Site Explorer will show that page ranking for no keywords and having no search hits, because Hubspot’s actual home page is on the “www” subdomain.
